Health screenings conducted by veterinarians and evaluated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to detect genetic diseases in dogs. The most common tests include x-rays for hip and elbow dysplasia, cardiac evaluations, and eye exams. These evaluations help breeders make informed decisions to produce healthier litters.
-
The AKC DNA Program recommends that breeders perform DNA tests that are relevant to their breed. The AKC DNA + Health Kit includes over 328 markers for health and traits, and every dog receives results for all tests. However, not all genetic variants have been validated in every breed. Additionally, some genetic tests are not included in the AKC DNA + Health Kit. Breeders may also choose to make breeding decisions based on genetic tests that are not included in Parent Club recommendations, but may still be relevant to their breed or line.
